ALCOHOL & SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION PROJECT
The Alcohol & Substance Abuse Prevention Project (ASAPP) is a five-year grant from DBHDD that aims to 1) Reduce the early onset of alcohol use among youth (9-20 yr olds) and 2) Reduce the early onset of electronic nicotine delivery systems (electronic cigarettes) use among youth (9-20 yr olds). The project utilizes a Positive Social Norms environmental approach to educate the community and an individual level strategy to work families using the Strengthening Families Program.
ASAPP PROJECT GOALS
1
Reduce the early onset of alcohol use among youth (9-20 yr olds).
2
Reduce the early onset of electronic nicotine delivery systems (electronic cigarettes) use among youth (9-20 yr olds).
ASAPP PROJECT STRATEGIES
1
Strengthening Families Program (SFP)
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for high-risk and general population families. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly improve parenting skills and family relationships, reduce problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills.
2
Positive Social Norms (PSN)
The strategy of the social norms approach is to gather credible data from a target population and then, using various health communication strategies, consistently tell it the truth about its actual norms of health, protection, and the avoidance of risk behaviors. With repeated exposure to a variety of positive, data-based messages, the misperceptions that help to sustain problem behavior are reduced, and a greater proportion of the population begins to act in accord with the more accurately perceived norms of health, protection, and safety.
Inspired by the positive impact that colleges and universities have experienced promoting student health using the social norms approach, a growing number of middle schools, high schools, and communities have begun to investigate the possibility of implementing their own social norms projects.
